D&D at the library

new

My D&D show will be at the Newton Free Library for the month of January. Stop by and say “Hello!”

The library is such a peaceful, welcoming place for all … books, music, museum passes, classes, and so much more. How lucky are we to have such a resource!

Below is the long story of how the D&D series came to be …

Making improvisational quilt blocks is always cathartic, but leads to piles of irregular, chaotic pieces of fabric. To turn them into a quilt, I cut them into squares and let them settle into a grid. Sometimes a little bit of chaos is good!

As I completed the first quilt of this series, Chaotic Good, I stumbled upon the Dungeons & Dragons gameworld of moral and ethical alignment grids. Gameplay characters are defined by their views of good vs evil and lawful vs chaos; yielding a grid of nine possible options (including neutral). Although I’m not a Dungeons & Dragons player, I found the alignment grid to be a fascinating source of inspiration.

I completed the Chaotic series with neutral and completely “no rules” quilts. The Neutral series is based on the balance of the circle, the push/pull of law and chaos, and a neutral color palette. The Lawful series was more of a challenge for me as I set a slate of precise rules and tried to follow them.
